Robotics and Technology Club

Our Coding Cohort led by Ms. Monica is taking a deep dive into the following coding languages in our upcoming March meeting:  Python, Java, Javascript, Swift, C++, Objective C, and HTML.  In our last meeting, students selected these languages, self-organized into small groups, and created a collaborative document to share links to tutorials, findings, and terminology/definition lists.

Our Robotics Cohort led by Mr. Doug  is actually building a 3D printer using a borrowed 3D printer. Students organized in this club will learn the basics behind robotics while getting hands-on experience with 3D printing. Stay tuned for more updates!

We are excited to meet this month so please mark your calendars for March 5th and March 19th from 4:15-5:00. Thank you to Karen Aman for putting in time to look into creating a carpool arrangement. Please contact Ms. Monica or Mr. Doug if you have any questions.

Farm Camp

Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in student led Farm Camp!  This camp has limited enrollment and is beginning to fill up.  John Taylor Williams is hosting Farm Camp for students ages 7-11, on Friday, March 30th. Campers will be playing group games outside and cooking healthy snacks, while implementing some Montessori elements during the day. Campers will also be going on a school tour, planting in the greenhouse, and doing some arts and crafts! This camp is student led, with adult chaperones, and will support the agriculture program here at JT WIlliams. This camp will be from 8:30am-5pm with a charge of $40 a camper!  See the attached Flyer for more details.  Sign up on this cheddarup link.

Last night, my wife and I saw the documentary “Screenagers” at Northwest School of the Arts. The movie showcased perspectives of both kids and parents as they navigate through the digital age and confront issues, like cyber bullying, addiction to technology and violence in gaming. It also addresses the social issues of when and how phones are being used, both by children and adults. What is appropriate to say and do online and why? The sixty-eight minute documentary offers a good balance of scientific data and realities of moderating teen phone use in an entertaining, yet informative way.  We walked away from the film with some good ideas that we plan on adopting in our home. The website, has some valuable tools and resources.

Heavenly Hands Home Care & ProFlowers Online

Maybe you’ve already heard the story of Vincent Mitchell and his business, Heavenly Hands Home Care?  Well, whether or not you have, it’s a story worth sharing and repeating.  Mr. Mitchell received a donation from ProFlowers online of about 70,000 bouquets of flowers after Valentine’s Day.  He decided to give these flowers to teachers.  He said, ‘I want to give them to the schools. Instead of guns, let’s give flowers,’ Mitchell said. “Give some love. It helps the day go by. It changes the atmosphere from bad to good.”  This massive flower distribution effort began last Thursday and is still going on.  Flowers have been given not only to CMS schools, but to some Gaston County Schools and to some VA Hospitals.  Williams Montessori teachers received flowers courtesy of Vincent Mitchell and ProFlowers Online this past Tuesday.
