Spring Intersession Overview
In addition to traditional academic studies, each Williams student is required to participate in eight two-week intensive field study courses during their high school years. Each “Intersession” course includes vigorous academic requirements paired with hands-on learning experiences, often including overnight travel and/or community service. In the Fall, students participate in grade level/theme-based intersessions. Spring Intersessions vary by year and are offered based on student choice as well as instructor preference. Students receive 0.5 credits for each Intersession, and passing all eight are required in order to receive a diploma. The current Spring Intersession courses that students are participating in are:
All rising 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students also recently participated in a survey for Spring Intersession options for next year!
Spring Intersession: Scratch Cooking
Scratch Cooking Intersession is wrapping up this week. We volunteered at Friendship Trays early Monday morning and went to the grocery store for Meal #3, our Southern Style Meal, and Desserts. The students have to research recipes, set the table, and budget accordingly. The students have also been harvesting and serving some of the fresh vegetables from our greenhouse on campus! The students are completing a research project on a local Charlotte Restaurant that uses mostly local ingredients and is making a “how to” video on a kitchen or cooking hack. On Friday students will be going out to eat at a local restaurant Uptown to end our experience together.
Scratch Cooking Intersession
Spring Intersession: Fishing
Fishing Intersession kicked off last week with marine studies at Edisto Island. We tent camped at the beach campground, fished in the surf, marsh and estuary as well as received lessons from an expert fisherwoman on the island! This week our focus is on freshwater fishing, where we will explore water quality/related fish species at Freedom Park, McAlpine Park, and Reedy Creek Park. We will be testing temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity (using a Secchi disk) at each location and will compare catch length, habitats, weights, and coloration. We have had such a blast and look forward to what this week has in store!
Spring Intersession: DIY
The DIY Intersession group has been hard at work these past two weeks. The theme of our work has been “Renewal”. We have visited the McColl Center for Art and Innovation, shopped various thrift and home improvement stores, and have completed service at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. Students have applied the theme of renewal to their concept of home and community through nail and string art, building birdhouses, decorating picnic tables, and taking old furniture and giving it new life for our school community. It has been a blast and hopefully you will see the student’s work popping up around school!
Donation Request for Makerspace
In the spirit of Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Ms. Monica is asking all families to take a look at their craft closets, junk drawers, art spaces, and tool sheds to donate items to build up our material supplies for the Makerspace. Items that are new or gently used would be a great addition to the space she and Ms. Cyndi are building in the Makerspace. We are working on creating experiences for students to come in during lunches to create while eating lunch. More information to come!
